Dnd 5e What Does "Any Items With Which You Are Proficient" For Inheritor Background Mean?
- #4,626
Hm. Just to gauge general opinion on a thing: For college level 5E campaigns, how would people feel nearly an Elf / One-half-Elf using the Inheritor background to start with a (weaker) Moonblade? Thematically it seems sound plenty to me and the Inheritor background leaves ample room for means to keep it from being a freebie if the DM so desires (someone chasing the [Half]Elf to claim information technology for their self, allowing it in the instance of someone poorly suited to use information technology like a Druid or Wizard but not a Fighter or whatnot, etcetera), but I know in that location's been a lot of grumbling in some places over Inheritor in general due to RAW and the ambivalence of RAI.
Personally I'd say it's fine, though I'd probably accept them spend one of their starting magic items from showtime at a higher level on it so as to not merely give them a free magic item over the other players. It works thematically as you said and provides some nice plot hooks, and if nerfed information technology won't be too far out of the norm for balance, just personally I don't retrieve backgrounds should provide a large mechanical advantage over other players.

Indeed, that'south the principal reason Inheritor got a ton of grumbling (and, admittedly, swooning) when the Adventurer'southward Guide start came out.
That depends, which Moonblade?
The one in the DMG, presumably with a 1 or 2 automobile-rolled for the number of additional stones set within it. As said it would provide a big mechanical border if rolled traditionally and information technology yielded something like a v or half dozen, but with but +one rock y'all're finer looking at a +1 weapon with an odd quirk like a bonus to AC or the power to shed calorie-free.

Honestly, I don't think Inheritor normally does provide a big mechanical boost. It doesn't ever say you lot're getting a magic item, or y'all're able to sell any you're item is, in fact it gives a listing of items which are by and big pretty basic. Document, trinket, clothing, book, jewelry, story, tattoo. Saying that the item received from the Inheritor background is magic without spending any resources, is like saying the Sailor background ways y'all get your own ship without resource expenditure.
There is no such thing as a generic Moonblade, which bloodline?
Who did they inherit information technology from, what is it'due south history, etc?
The boilerplate Moonblade should take a backstory almost equally long as a PC's.
I'm pretty sure this is just a hypothetical situation, with a generic moonblade from the line of the generic elf/half-elf who inherited it.

RAW information technology can considering the exact wording on your starting equipment lets you theoretically begin with anything you tin can be considered practiced with. The reason RAI is iffy is that information technology'southward readily debatable equally to whether this is intentional (and intended to be curbed by the DM implementing a claiming / trial in relation to your Background), unintended but with the overall concept sound (that you lot tin can start with something yous are proficient with, period, but information technology must be (for an case) mundane), or unintended with the intent of post-obit traditional background starting equipment (starting with Tools or a Kit, specifically, that you are practiced with).
RAW you could start with Armor of Invulnerability with Inheritor.

Technically I believe Jeremy Crawford, who is the games rule managing director, stated the text was wrong. He is the just person immune to make official rulings through Sage Advice or twitter. According to him you should get the tool or instrument y'all choose for the proficiency in the background.
Ah, that would explain how I missed it (for context: This description comes ~xi months subsequently the book's release, and is via Twitter as opposed to Sage Advice).

Well it didn't help that almost ane.5 months earlier that tweet Mike Mearls had stated this
Simply a quick google told me that just Jeremy Crawford can make official rulings. Everyone else is only giving advice.
I think the Take a chance League had always worked off Jeremy Crawfords rulings though.
edit: I confirmed that the Gamble League had the wording changed for their tournaments the aforementioned month the book came out.

Gotcha. Will not happen once more sir.
Edit: misquote, deplorable.
That will exist mighty difficult with 3e (being close to 20 years onetime at this point), and from what I meet of him, even with Pathfinder.
Eh, i thought of a flim-flam with gestalt and bloodlines that is, afaik, new, just last year, but gestalt is pretty niche.

Oh I think optimization and new thinking is cool and fine and crawly (mainly because I do it all the time ), it was more the toxic tone of that mail I was apologizing for.

Should accept Attunement required and should not flat out double Motion. Motion bonuses are pretty rare and potent in 5e. A +30 bonus to Motility, or even better the ability to Nuance equally a Bonus Activity, would be more balanced.
Or at least they were until the Tabaxi got published as a playable race in a main supplement
The CR should not be based on Level. Instead, it would exist best if you created a Rare to Legendary progression of items with various associated Titanforms. Perhaps fluff it and so that weaker Helms can be upgraded to stronger Helms with the equivalent of a item creation quest but subtracting the weaker helms GP cost from the time required.
I disagree strongly. I find it vastly preferable to have items which scale with your character, building upward in power every bit you exercise, than items which progressively deprecate as the game advances, and which you "switch out" for new, better ones. That's always kind of lame, making magic items experience less of import, less unique, and more than part of a streamlined progression the way they were in iii.5.
Y'all should never have to say "well, that magic helm which turns me into a giant of iron really makes me weaker than my base of operations form now, time to ditch something that's been i of the coolest aspects of my characters for the past 5 levels and pick upwardly something better to fill the slot."
(if yous want a point of comparison, look at the Belts of Giant Strength. These have a rare-to-legendary progression, but whatever chugalug is always going to be better than the Strength your character would have at whatsoever level, and so will always be valuable. Past contrast, a Polymorph-into-CR-seven item is going to somewhen be useless.)

One time or twice during the story. Near of the fourth dimension, it's getting a magical replacement for their mundane weapon. It's quite rare to go from one magic weapon for some other, strictly amend, magic weapon. Magic equipment replacement in general tends to exist quite rare.

Unremarkably it's "shits broken, need new magic swag..."
That fight with the Civilisation-hating Gnoll Druid with the Rust Monster Mount?
Yeah, you aren't getting out of that unscathed...
All that Drow Swag you stole and idea you lot could take to the surface?
Well, about that...
You decided to bring your Flametongue to battle the Salamanders?
Non the all-time idea...

So, I just found out about a little trick that can provide immortality for Psions and so long as you tin can keep a power up(okay, at that place'due south quintessence cheese involved, simply it's mostly the ability). Said power basically lets you possess metal items. Then you have the Psionic Sandwich pull a fast one on. Combining the two, you tin permanently possess an particular to treat every bit your "body," presumably having no bodily needs and Construct traits, and so temporarily possess nearby items.
The ability is, IIRC, called Stealsteel. Or was information technology Steelsteal? The Psionic Sandwich flim-flam uses Psionic Polymorph and Astral Seed to permanently go a sandwich, although the trick works for any item. There are a few options, hither. You tin embed your permanent body into a hard to achieve, but frequently traveled past, area, then you are safe and have frequent travel options, or you can have your permanent body be a frequently used item to enchant every bit a magic/psionic particular. I recommend spiked armor, because that stuff sees a lot of apply when the spikes have Defending and you tin can apply Stealsteel to see and speak by possessing the spikes/armor, whichever isn't your permanent body.
Generally, you lot want to shell out for Adamantine armor and spikes for the durability, and so get a power for self mobility. You tin, if you pull it off right, make people think you are a "normal" possessed/animated conform of armor. If you lot manage to grab Astral Construct, or have frequent use, so y'all go the pick to human activity like you are an intelligent item.
